Watching the Blackhawks game and waiting to leave for my son's playoff basketball game. I have been the asst coach this year - with him moving to high school next year, this is the end of bball coaching for me. I've coached each winter since 1st grade and it's always been a good use of time and has made the winter pass by a bit quicker. I was outside before and saw the tulips and daffodils are a few inches tall now. Hopefully they won't get buried by a late snowstorm like they did last year.

I had a nice surprise at work last week. I was promoted from manager to director. I have now been at this company for a year, and have been able to implement a lot of measurable changes. I have been allowed to do the things that I thought needed to be done/changed, and it has been fun. Having a job I enjoy is something that is so refreshing....so rare. Even if this promotion did not happen, I'd feel the same way. A company that actually tries to be a place where talented people want to work is very rare these days.

and so, the Hawks are up by 3, and we are off for a big ball game now.

    Congratulations on your promotion. What a difference a year makes! I emailed you last year and you helped me get through my husband's layoff. We were living in Michigan at the time and he ended up getting a great job in Virginia. He was out of work for 5 months and the kids and I moved to VA in Jan. I am now looking for work, but I have the luxury of taking it easy and not having to apply for the ones that don't interest me. I would be working for the extras that we want. I want to thank you again for your encouraging words while we were unemployed. That time in my life has actually changed who I am a little bit. I will NEVER waste money or take a job for granted again!

 Since my last post, July 8, I went to Canada for the 40 somethingth time for fishing.  The trip was fantastic as always.  And played golf every week.   I played golf yesterday.  It was round 37 for the year.  A real indicator of my age is I am now sore the day after I golf.  I used to play basketball for hours at a time and not be sore at all the next day.  Of course, I haven't played basketball in 16 years.  And for the 10 years before that, I was just taking up space on the bball court. But 50 years ago, I could dunk the ball.  Weakly, but I could dunk. I started writing this blog in 2008 when I was frustrated and disgusted with unemployment and the job search.  Now that I am retired, I look at the posts on Linkedin that are exactly the same things I was writing about then.  I am so glad to not be on that treadmill anymore.   so, look for a new post around Christmas.

A week ago I was sitting here thinking about surgery in the morning.  And tomorrow will be one week post op.  This weekend was painful. but the last 2 days have been better.  I actually hit some golf balls this morning.  Still limping and I should use the crutches more than I do, but it is amazing how quickly you are up and about after surgery.  20 yrs ago I would have been in the hospital for a few days.  Now in and out in 5 hours.  I haven't blogged or looked at my book in awhile.  Time to make a push and get the book illustrated and done.  Today was the last day of work for a young lady in the office.  When I wished her well, she said to keep in touch and she looked forward to buying a copy of the book when it is published.  so there is one copy spoken for.  starting to look at my gear for the fishing trip.  I ordered this years pair of cheap sunglasses and some fishing gear.  Next weekend I will start going th...

 I have not posted since July....4 months ago.  time does fly.  since I last posted, I had a job, and left a job, and I have been to Florida twice, and did our annual fishing trip to Canada, played about 20 rounds of golf.  and other than that, didn't do much.  and have enjoyed every minute of not doing much.   as my mom always said, "Too soon old, and too late smart".  Working at shitty jobs to buy crap you don't need is not a good strategy.  I realize I am fortunate to be able to be picky about what job I will accept, but there seems to be a shortage of jobs that I would find interesting, challenging or worth doing.  The bottom line is you trade your time for their money, so both sides need to get what they are looking for.  and in my case, I really don't know what that is.  When I grow up, I will probably have a really exciting career...maybe I will be a stewardess and live that glamourous life.   on the plus side ...
